Laos

Por este orden (inverso), enumero a modo de introducción, los países que ocupan el Top 10 del Índice de Percepción de Transparencia Internacional (www.transparency.org): Somalia. Myanmar. Iraq. Haiti. Uzbekistan. Tonga. Sudan. Chad. Afghanistan. Laos. Empatado con Guinea, Guinea Ecuatorial y la República Democrática del Congo se encuentra Laos, en 10º lugar (o 168º lugar, depende como se mire). Un país del que poco o nada se sabe, o si se sabe, nada se dice, salvo que limita con Myanmar al noroeste, con China al norte, con Vietnam al este, con Camboya al sur y con Tailandia al oeste. Asimismo Laos ha sido uno de los países más bombardeados durante el siglo pasado, en la actualidad está calificado como uno de los países con peor economía y libertad del mundo, y donde, por poner un último ejemplo concreto, el 80% de la población se dedica a la agricultura de subsistencia.

Dichas todas estas bondades, quizá a primera vista uno no entienda los motivos que llevan a alguien a visitar Laos, salvo si uno decide huir de la justicia para convertirse en un asceta. En mi opinión, no son sus templos, ni su belleza natural, ni su gastronomía ni tampoco su clima. Una visita a Laos merece la pena simplemente para comprobar in situ la calurosa y delicada bienvenida con la que el forastero es recibido por sus gentes (no así por los funcionarios de inmigración), la fresca amabilidad de estos, su simpatía, su capacidad para sobreponerse ante tanta adversidad, y por encima de todo, su envidiable ritmo de vida propulsado por la omnipresente BeerLao. Es difícil de creer que la gente sea feliz en Laos, pero a pesar de las circunstancias, ciertamente lo parece. En definitiva, un país del que si algo he de decir, necesariamente será para bien.

Tied with Guinea, Equatorial Guinea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Laos, in 10th position (or 168th postion, depending how you look at it). A country of which little or nothing is known, or if known, nothing is said, except that shares borders with Myanmar to the northwest, China to the north, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south and Thailand to the south west. Moreover, Lao has been one of the most bombed countries during the last century, nowadays is qualified as one of the worst economies and the least free countries in the world, and where, to give one last brief example, 80% of the population is engaged in agriculture subsistence.

After saying all these virtues, perhaps at first glance you do not understand the reasons that lead someone to visit Lao, except if oneself decides to flee from justice to become an ascetic. In my opinion, are not their temples, nor its natural beauty, or its gastronomy nor its climate. A visit to Laos worth simply to check on the spot and delicate warm welcome with which the stranger is greeted by its people (and not by immigration officials), fresh friendliness of the locals, their sympathy, its ability to overcome so much adversity, and above all, its enviable lifestyle propelled by the omnipresent BeerLao. It's hard to believe that people are happy in Laos, but despite the circumstances, it certainly appears. Ultimately, a country that if something I have to say, is necessarily for the better.
