(In the name of the greyhound
)

This morning I went to watch greyhound races at the Walthamstow Stadium, north-east of London. It is said in the working-class rumours that in here there has been some landmark races. No broad-brimmed hats nor even eccentricities from the Ascot´s high-class sister, but with more humour, more charm and more beer that anyone could expect at midday.

As usual, the dummy pacemaker heading the contest every once and then, without showing any tiredness at any time. Before every start of the race, the slender sprinters, in a bad-mannered way, were loosening their muscles at the same time they were reducing the strains while the short walk in front of the main half-empty tribune. Meanwhile the few public was staking and getting some drinks in the bar ready to enjoy the next race.

The discipline´s trap for the unaware spectators, as I was taught, it´s right the opposite that happens with the millionaire horses, here you don´t have to know about the greyhound´s pedigree not even if the recent meals of the animal have been big enough. As I listened from a well-experience local, the secret is inside their names. - Read them carefully, choose the one that you like the most and bet for it. If wins, go and take your reward. You had good taste. If not, don´t worry, bet again, the most important thing always is to particpate.

Astonished, I went to the bar to ask for a tea trying to assimilate such an advice and there, fortunately, I found the truth either for the secret that the greyhound´s specialist told me and for the answer to the question that came up to me after listening that advisory comment coming from that lady: 1, 45 pounds per pint of beer, what is in other words, half price.

CutUp

Hackney Wick, East London. Yesterday.

(CCTV)

Closed-circuit television is the use of video cameras to supervise a diversity of ambients and activities. It´s called closed because it differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, so is just received by a small number of spectators.

According to some research, a person that lives in London could be daily recorded around 300 times. This system works with the objetive of preserving streets secure and watch over the inhabitants´ interests.

Today, the Metropolitan Police has shown the last figures about violence and crime in the city, proving that camera or cameraless, citizens´ security decreases meanwhile crime, I suppose because it´s televised, increases: 906.442 crimes were recorded, including 175 murders, 179.063 violent acts, 2.145 rapes (add the curious fact that in this city the percentage of males raped is higher than females), 44.179 robberies and 95.886 burglaries. Moreover, in 3.492 ocasions this selected but limited audience have watched how the main actors of this detective stories have brandished a gun to add more realism to the subject.

After reading such figures, I start to understand, not to share, the use of this video-recording system by the local authorities. The topic of security in this place becoming, no less, a matter of movies.

The Malta Experience

(The Malta Experience)

When you are travelling, regardless of which is the chosen destination, we face situations beyond our senses, most of the time, difficult to understand. No matter which are the reasons why we arrived were we´re or the previous expectations that we´d ´ve made up from the place. After all, we don´t understand them ´cos we don´t know them. The fact is that as soon as the new reality that surrounds us seizes our senses without asking, oneself starts to journey of time, to revival what didn´t have seen or suffered.

This way is how everything happen in Valetta, an old city, wrinkled, destroyed but luckily in permanent reconstruction, full of slide-shaped streets that end near to the sea, launching you to a new dimension without previous advice. Just after crossing under the massive wall surrounding the city and from where a line of cannons focuses the wind peacefully remembering the portraits of past undesirable visitors, it´s easy to understand that there was battles inside. There´s no need to open so much our eyes to stare at an extraordinary location still recovering from the wartime. It´s vast the history of the city (and the island´s too) plundered by every site across the centuries. And odd too.

Among others, the Phoenician, the Vandals, the Arabs, the Ottomans, the French and then the English, all of them left their skin around the island and took as a deal whatever they wanted from there. Nowadays, among the historic ruins is left an empty gap that from time ago till now allows the foreigner to fill the ending of the story up, or at least, to suggest it, like a touristic pastime as one pleases, totally free and with no fear to mistake. Moreover, probably after all of this, the most attractive fact results to try to understand the real experience of Malta. For me, the most incomprehensible of the whole trip, were, no doubt, their people.

(Hoxton Square)

Hoxton Square is not a common square. Located in the neighbourhood of Hackney, north-east of the city, it´s the centre of the London´s new fashionable wave. Former shelter for drugdealers, sluts and thugs from the East End in general, the square, quite dreary and dangerous years ago, has made up itself with a range of bars, studios and galleries that have been opening their doors all at once to celebrate the arise of the the new-tech and the arrival of the new digital era. The streets have been infected by all-kind of artists, designers and high-life´s friends, people with loads of support mixed with those who have no means at all, but proud of their territory, they are still fighting to resist. Sooner or later they will move, both, ´coz when talking about trends, in this city yesterday is tomorrow, and tomorrow is already today.

(Mobile intelligence)

Since years, the mobile phone has been extended non-stop in every level of this 21st century´s well-developed society which we are taking part of. It´s not a matter of age, status, or simply, communicational need. Having a phone is as important as breathing, or at least, that´s the feeling I have, moreover, the one we believe we have.

The cellular phone is requested to take us a pic, to record us a video, to sing us a song, to show us the email, to wake up us on time or to enlight our way. We even believe that it can think for us, and at that point, obviously, we are mistaken. The mobile phone´s basic functions have passed from three to twenty-three. As a result, dependence has increased, and no side effects too.

Nowadays the mobile seems to be a reflection of the personality and the sensivity of every one. There´s a line that says that the face is the soul´s reflex, although if we´d like to know and to undestand a person in deeply, I would never rule out starting with the following question: which phone do you have?.

Without going any further, in any concert, the public light up their phones instead of using traditional lighters. Does it have any relation with the new tobacco laws? Perhaps, sooner than later, the new mobile against tobacco will be released, and with that a new intelligent function will come, the 24th.
